As a Process Development Engineer, you will support process qualification for Veeco Advanced Deposition and Etch (AD&E) business. You will have a unique opportunity to support Veecos operations and process groups as well as interacting with customers to develop and demonstrate tool process capabilities. This position will combine process and test engineering responsibilities. The individual will prepare the tool test requirements to assure that the tool meets all functional requirements prior to process qualification. In addition, the job will entail completing process qualification, ensuring the tool achieves all customer performance requirements.The position will be based in Somerset, New Jersey.


  • Review tool-specific customer acceptance criteria
  • Generate and publish the qualification plan including required tests and expected test durations
  • Conduct process qualifications ofVeeco Depositionand Etch tools according to Veeco/customer process specifications
  • Measure and analyze processed material
  • Prepare and present progress and summary reporting to Veeco Management as tool qualification progresses
  • Escalate issues if unable to achieve process requirements
  • Provide completed test data as requested by the customer
  • Generate tool test requirements (ATL) which defines required tests and results to validate the tool is functioning to the required specifications
  • Audit ATL document as tool build progresses and audit ATL at end of tool completion


Bachelors degree in Material Science, Physics or a related field with at least 5 years of experience or a Masters degree and at least 3 years of related experience in thin film processes is required. Expertise in vacuum thin film technology is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with thin film characterization techniques such as four-point probe, stress measurements, ellipsometry, depth profilers, Nanospec etc.
  • Experience in fabrication and characterization of magnetic or piezoelectric thin films, preferred
  • In-depth understanding and working knowledge of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and/or Design of Experiments (DOE)
  • Data analysis, technical report writing, and customer presentations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and customer interaction a must
  • Limited domestic and international travel
  • Experience with ion source technology (IBE, IBD) a plus
  • Ability to operate different tool types and troubleshoot with data for root cause analysis and issue resolution
